Real name, Jean Schopfer. He came from a French Protestant family that emigrated to Switzerland in the 17th century. He studied at the Sorbonne and the École du Louvre and began publishing in 1899. He was a collector of Persian art, owned a gallery in Paris, traveled by car and bicycle in Persia, and was in St. Petersburg at the time of the Revolution. In addition, he fought for France in the finals of two tennis championships. He is the author of the books Mayerling and Ariane, which have been made into films.
