From 1926 he was a professor at Charles University in the fields of palaeontology and zoogeography. He was instrumental in opening the Macocha Abyss to the public and described new species of animals living in caves. For more than thirty years, he has been researching European karsts, as well as geomorphology, palaeontology and archaeology. His archaeological team discovered the Venus of Věstonice. He authored a number of scientific works, the work Moravian Karst was published after his death. In 1948 he was deprived of his professorship and membership in the Academy of Arts and Sciences because his son emigrated to the USA, where his mother was from.
