He studied chemistry at the Vienna and Prague technical schools and then joined Count Czernin's sugar factory in Dymokure. Later he was elected head of the Sugar Research Station and from 1905 he was a professor of sugar engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He held this position until 1930. He led and was a member of various professional organisations and was the author or co-author of about 150 publications in all areas of sugar production.
