A professor of surgery at the German University in Prague, he worked from 1879 at the Second Czech Surgical Clinic, in 1887-1918 as head of the surgical department of the German Children's Hospital and in 1891-1924 as chief of surgery at the Hospital of Merciful Brothers in Prague. He founded the Red Cross Sanatorium, which he also headed. He was the first in Bohemia to perform plastic lengthening of the Achilles heel. He is the author of the book History of Surgery in Bohemia and a number of articles. He is also the author of six collections of poetry. His brother Edvín was the director of the botanical department of the National Museum.
