He contributed to the diagnosis of nervous diseases and described bony spine; this disease was named after him. He founded an experimental psychological laboratory in Kazan in 1886 and a psychoneurological laboratory in St. Petersburg in 1903. He died of poisoning two days after diagnosing Stalin with severe paranoia. A few years later, his son Pyotr was sentenced to death and the family sent to a labor camp.
