He trained as a butcher in Vienna and after military service returned to his family farm, where he began to farm independently in 1886. He supported the establishment of economic associations and cooperatives, was chief of the volunteer firemen's association, deputy mayor and chairman of the civic credit union in his native village. He wrote economic articles for regional newspapers. In 1920-1925 he was a deputy for the Czechoslovak People's Party and in 1925-1929 a senator.
