He graduated from the Mining Academy in Příbram and Styr, then worked as a representative of the French metallurgical company in Prague. As a member of the Czech State Progressive Party he emigrated in 1914 and in Geneva he joined the First Resistance. From 1918 he was consul in Switzerland, then served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1925-1928), Greece (1928-1935) and Latvia (1938-1939). During the Second World War he was an official of the government-in-exile in England. He retired at his own request in 1949.
