After three years of studying law, he transferred to the Prague Conservatoire, where he studied composition alongside with organ and piano under Vítězslav Novák. In 1913-1920 he taught singing and piano at the municipal school in Tábor. From 1920 to 1941 he was an inspector of music schools, and between 1935 and 1947 he taught singing at the Prague Conservatory. He directed several singing societies, such as Fibich, Hlahol and Typografia. He wrote for music magazines, between 1949 and 1954 he was a voice advisor to the Vít Nejedlý Army art ensemble and served as an artistic advisor to the Ministry of Education and National Enlightenment. As a composer he was focused mainly on vocal works.
