How to Use the Langhans Archive

The Langhans Archive allows for easy and intuitive browsing through both the original categories and a search function. If you know the name of a specific person you are looking for, simply enter their name into the search bar located in the upper right corner of the page (Filter). The archive will display matching results. This feature is ideal for quickly finding portraits without browsing through individual categories.

Categories in the Langhans Archive

The Langhans Archive has been systematically divided into categories. The concept of categories originates from the numerical labeling of the original storage boxes—Roman numerals I to X. Each category is dedicated to a specific theme, reflecting the professional group of the portraits contained within.

I. Actors, Singers
II. Politicians
III. Writers
IV. Musicians
V. Legionnaires, Soldiers, Military Leaders
VI. Visual Artists, Architects
VII. Judges, Officials, Entrepreneurs
VIII. Foreigners
IX. Clergy
X. Scientists

During the conservation process, it became apparent that not all negatives could be assigned to a specific category, as some storage boxes were unlabeled.

For these, new categories were created: XI. Costumes, Cities, Politicians, Sokol Members, Artists, Academics, Industrialists, Nobility and XIII. Miscellaneous. Category XII was curated by Ivan Lutterer in preparation for an exhibition at the Rudolfinum Gallery in 2000.

XI. Nobility, Costumes, Cities, Politicians, Sokol Members, Artists, Academics, Industrialists
XII. Selection by Ivan Lutterer
XIII. Miscellaneous

Following the completion of restoration efforts in 2023, Categories XI to XIII were redistributed among the original Langhans categories. Only "Nobility" and "Sokol Members" were given dedicated sections, now labeled as XV. Nobility and XVI. Sokol Members in the Langhans Archive.

The book System Langhans follows this updated categorization, though the online archive presented here currently does not.
